The first couple of climbs will certainly get your heart rate going, especially when you see them in the distance – they look almost vertical. Golden Spike 4.5 is a difficult Jeep trail connecting Poison Spider 3.5 and Gold Bar Rim 4.5. The trail is predominantly on slickrock with some sandy spots. The views open up into some pretty spectacular scenery. The first ridge you will cross is immediately out of the parking lot. It was wet on this day, but easily crossable. At the base of this, is a narrow sandy area called “Lake Michigan” due to the potential for high water. Combine a staggering number of trails involving a range of mild to gnarly rock crawling, with outrageous scenery, and a town culture that supports and caters to off-roaders, what’s not to love.

The trail cannot be accessed directly from any paved highway. We're a bunch of extreme Jeep enthusiasts like yourself always on a trail ride or at a Jeep-related event. Moab, Utah is considered by many to be the mecca of off-roading. Much of the trail skirts the edge of high cliffs overlooking Moab. As I was driving down the highway just past the Corona Arch trailhead I saw a large culvert and thought it would be fun to take some pictures of it. Golden Spike is a dream trail of challenging obstacles, which include such well-known names as the Launch Pad, Skyline Drive, the Golden Crack, the Golden Stairs, The Wall and Double Whammy. Its non-stop challenges from beginning to end. Its a long trip that starts with Poison Spider Mesa trail, continues on the actual Golden Spike trail, and finishes with a slice of the Gold Bar Rim trail. In the first few minutes, you climb up onto a saddle, riding a narrow ridge – this is just a sample of what’s to come. Follow along on our adventure then go out on your own Be a responsible explorer. Golden Spike is perhaps the quintessential Moab 4WD trail. The trail climbs almost instantly right from the staging area. Click it for the high res version if you want to read it.Īfter a quick air down at the parking lot of Hell’s Revenge Jesse, Melanie and I were on the trail by 8:30. The sign at the trailhead for Hell’s Revenge. A few of the climbs look pretty crazy, the views amazing, and conquering the famed “Hell’s Gate” was one of the reasons I came to Moab. This trail was on my Moab Bucket List™ for a long time.
